Want to learn how to maintain an active lifestyle and regular workout routine on a budget? Check out my favorite ways to stay fit without buying a gym membership.
Not only am I a foodie but I’m also a fitness fan. What I’m also a fan of?…Free stuff. To say that I’m cheap is probably true. While I will invest money into experiences without hesitating (like this awesome trip to San Francisco we went on last year!), when it comes to anything else I’d much rather go the cheaper route unless I know it’s a long term investment. You could argue that health is a long term investment – I’d agree with you – and therefore gym memberships are totally worth it. And if that is what works best for you then please join that gym! But this article is for the fitness buffs who would rather save their money for other things and still maintain a decent workout schedule.
I used to be far too obsessed with how hard I worked out, how long, and how many times a week because I had a serious body image issue. But now I focus on what my body is telling me it wants for an exercise. Generally I stick to workout videos during the week. On days I’m feeling sore from the previous day’s workout I’ll go lighter on my daily exercise and/or focus on a different muscle group that isn’t sore. Saturdays are my rest days where the only exercise I might be doing is walking outdoors or cleaning the house.
So! Without further ado here are my tips for how to get those workouts in on the cheap.
This is an obvious one but it’s worth mentioning because you get double the reward here – a workout and boost in mood from being outdoors. If I can be outside and it’s not too terribly cold then count me there. Try finding a lovely walking trail near you or even a new neighborhood you haven’t explored yet. If you’re in Austin, TX here are my favorite hiking trails:
Mount Bonnell, Emma Long Metropolitan Park, Walnut Creek Park, Riverplace Nature Trail, Barton Creek Greenbelt, Bull Creek District Park, Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve
If you have kids, go play with your kids for an hour or two. If you have a dog, go outside and play with your dog for a while. Find a tennis court where you can play for free or a basketball court where you can shoot some hoops. It won’t feel like exercise because you’re having fun.
Free Workout Videos Online
This has to be my second favorite way to get fit. I use free videos on Youtube on a weekly basis to get my sweat on. The only thing you will need for the majority of these workouts is a set of dumbells and a kettlebell. Here are some of my favorites but you can also find all of my saved workout videos on my Pinterest page.
Have fun getting fit in the new year!
Full Disclosure: I am not a licensed fitness trainer. Please see a professional or a doctor before you make any extreme lifestyle changes or if you are unsure of your ability to exercise.
